Cooking Connection Program

The Nutrition Education Cooking Connection program introduces students to seasonal produce through cooking and eating together in the classroom.  Under the teacher’s direction, students cooperatively prepare a healthy recipe while developing valuable lifelong skills.  Teachers receive professional development from Nutrition Education Cooking Coordinators, cooking equipment and ingredients to cook in the classroom.  Take-home recipes are distributed to all participating students so they may try it at home with their families.

What Students Gain From Cooking in the Classroom

  • Exposure to new, healthy foods and an understanding of the nutritional benefits
  • Hands-on and group-centered opportunities to support the classroom curriculum
  • Math, science, and language skills through active, cooperative involvement
  • Respect for the process of growing, cooking, and eating food
  • The more involved students are in the process of growing and preparing food, the more interested and open-minded they are in trying new foods

The Curriculum is standards-based and will allow classroom teachers a means for fully integrating nutrition education in the classroom.  Lessons are divided by grade levels (K-1, 2-3, and 4-6) and link to grade-specific standards in classroom curriculum areas such as Health Education, Math, Science, and English Language Arts.  The curriculum also offers classroom extension ideas and take-home recipes so that learning will continue long after the dishes are done.
