Nutrition Education at Farmer's Markets

A unique special project within Project EAT is the addition of farmers’ markets at two of the elementary school sites in Hayward.
Site coordinators provide nutrition education and fresh tastings in conjunction with a farmers’ market at two school sites in Hayward. The market is a USDA certified organic market. The market was created out of a need to increase access to fresh, organic produce for the school community. School staff, students, and parents visit the market and learn more about agriculture, taste fresh seasonal produce, and get to know the farmers.
Nutrition Education Site Coordinators from other schools bring their students to the markets for field trips and tastings made with the delicious produce grown by the farmers.

The farmers come from ALBA in Salinas and provide sustainably grown, organic produce for parents and students in the district.

Additional projects include working with the Alameda County Food Bank to provide food stamp referrals for parents.

Farmers’ Markets are every Tuesday 11am-4pm, September-June
